This New Year’s day, the much-anticipated 124th Tournament of Roses Parade, held in Pasadena, California, was themed “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” And as expected there were some very lovely costumes representing various countries and cultures…
Fittingly, the job of Grand Marshal of the 124th Rose Parade was awarded to Primatologist Dr., in her khaki colored lab coat that topped a festive red turtleneck and wintergreen skirt. Her props included – or dare we say a fashion accessory – an adorable toy chimp attempting to eat a banana.
This year’s 124th Tournament of Roses Parade included stunning costumes representing Indonesia, El Salvador, Mexico and China.
Top picks in costumes included the “Batik Dancer” representing Indonesia, in particular one whose turquoise, tan, white and gold costume was nothing short of magical in all its batik glory!
The hot pink and black clad “Mayan princess” from El Salvador made quite a splash with her colorful plumed headdress and skirt with the flowing train.
There were even peasant blouses and colorful skirts reminiscent of, representing Mexico. Ruffled skirts, flamenco style, were worn by dancers with the float from the City of Alhambra, California that is.
The China Airlines float, with its golden pagoda and Polynesian style tropical scene to include palm trees bending as though in a typhoon and native girls with straw headdresses, certainly brought out the tiki in many!
Uniforms on the various school bands are always interesting, including the wooden clogs on the Pride of the Dutchmen Marching Band from Orange City, Iowa.
Even cowgirls rode their ponies, decked out in Stetsons, chaps and boots, some wrangling along the way…
The Dr Seuss cats in hats with the Kaiser Permanente float were adorable as they performed in their unmistakable tall striped hats, white gloves and bows at the neck.
But the biggest surprise had to be the couple from Chesapeake, Virginia, Nicole Angelillo and Gerald Sapienza, who were married on the float as they proceeded in the parade, champagne glasses at the ready to the side. Congratulations to the couple on their nuptials!
More congratulations go to Rose Queen Vanessa Natalie Manjarrez, in her one-shoulder white goddess gown. Her court wore red versions of the same dress. Enjoy the slideshow linked here!
