Longtime Western movie actor Harry Carey Jr. died December 27 in Santa Barbara, California of natural causes at the age of 91. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his birth. Despite the same name, Carey, Jr. was not related to the famed baseball announcer Carey clan of Harry, Skip, and Chip.

Carey’s career spanned over five decades and included eleven films with “The Duke” John Wayne. The red headed actor was a favourite for western film director John Ford; in 1994 Carey wrote his memoir “Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company” detailing the expterience.

Born Henry George Carey Jr May 16, 1921 the son of silent film stars Olive and Harry Carey. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Along with the family business of acting, Carey also inherited his father’s love of horses and possessed notable horsemanship – a skill that helped to win him numerous roles. He also loved classical singing and spent time studying the art prior to becoming an actor. Though they never appeared in the same scene, Carey Sr. and Carey Jr. both played roles in the John Wayne film “Red River”. In 2003 Carey was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame.

Making his film debut in 1946 in “Rolling Home”, Carey went on to appear in over 150 roles in film and on television including “Pursued”, “Red River”, “3 Godfathers”, “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”, “Wagon Master”, “Rio Grande”, the taxi driver in “Niagara”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Waterfront”, “The Long Grey Line”, “Mister Roberts”, “The Lone Ranger”, as the camp counselor in several episodes of “The Adventures of Spin and Marty”, “The Searchers”, “Broken Arrow”, was filmed in “Rio Bravo” but the scenes were deleted, “The Great Impostor”, “The Rifleman”, “Perry Mason”, “Rawhide”, “Laramie”, “Ripcord”, 13 episodes of “Have Gun Will Travel”, three episodes of “Lassie”, five episodes of “Wagon Train”, four episodes of “Bonanza”, “Cimarron Strip”, “The Outcasts”, “Mannix”, “The Virginian”, “Big Jake”, “Cahill US Marshall”, 10 episodes of “Walt Disney’s Wonder World of Color”, “The Streets of San Francisco”, 12 episodes of “Gunsmoke”, “Black Beauty”, “Police Woman”, “BJ and the Bear”, “The Long Riders”, “Little House on the Prairie”, the original “Dallas”, “ChiPS”, the original “Knight Rider”, three episodes of plus the movie “Crossbow”, “The Exorcist III”, “Back to the Future III”, “Tombstone”, and “Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone”.

Carey is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years Marilyn, children – Melinda, Lily, and Tom, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
