These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock of his brethren; and the lad was with sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

-- Gen. 37:2 (KJV)

This verse now brings us up to speed of how dysfunctional Jacob's family really was. Jacob had four wives and thirteen children. In order to gain attention from his father, Joseph would eavesdrop on what his brothers would say and would tattle against them to their father. A seventeen year old shouldn't be tattling on anyone. Improper parenting leads to children doing immature things.

Numerical Analysis: The numerical pattern for this verse is 1,2,3,7. (1) Follow God in order for your future generations to be blessed. (2) The name Joseph means "adding." Walk in God's kingdom in order to increase in life. (3) To stay in the Spirit, do not use youthful inexperience as an excuse. (7) To be complete, do not overwork. Notice in the verse that Joseph was doing what his brothers were supposed to be doing.
