They are considered the most vicious women fighters the world has known. The Women of LTTE, also known as Tamil Tigers, and their male counterparts have been battling the Sri Lankan Government for Tamil autonomy since decades. These rebels even employ fighter aircraft -- almost unique among rebel forces anywhere. This is why, since the beginning of this particular rebellion, its support by the Indian Intelligence service RAW is an open secret. In fact, Indian complicity in formenting and abetting this bloody rebellion resulted in the assasination of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by a disaffected Tamil woman.
In this backdrop, yesterday's statement by Sri Lanka's Cabinet Minister and Defense Spokesman, Keheliya Rambukwella took on an ominous air. Rambukwella pointed out a number of parrallels between the terroristc tactics of LTTE and Al Quaida-Taliban. The Saturday Marriott Hotel Bombing in Islamabad, Pakistan, he pointed out, was very similar to the bombing of Colombo's Central Bank by LTTE terrorist in 1996 which killed 91 people. There also a truck loaded with explosives of similar intensity had rammed through the gates of the Bank.
Similarly the suicide jacket, employed by over two dozen suicide bombers in Pakistan over the last year, was actually developed by the Tamil Tigers. Even the approach seemed similar: "You see after every truce agreement the LTTE would regroup, rearm, and refund itself more vigorously and come back fighting with redoubled force. Exactly the way the Taliban have been doing in Pakistan over the last three years. This tactic also they seem to have learnt from LTTE's book."
Recently many Pakistani analysts have voiced concern that the USA is allowing Pakistan to be de-stabilized.
