The problem is very simple. Meaningful gun control is impossible. Oh, we can take the guns away from honest people all right. Law abiding citizens will give up their guns. But law abiding citizens with guns are not a problem at all. The niggling problem is with citizens who are not law abiding who have guns. The answer, then, is simply to take guns away from people who are not law abiding.
One can immediately see the impossibility of gun control. We simply cannot differentiate between a law abiding citizen and one who is not in time to make an appreciable difference in gun violence. We can safely conclude that crooks will always have guns. The technology is out there to make your own for gosh sakes!
And so it is that I will never fear a person with a gun, for I have one myself. During my long life I have accumulated several shotguns, a couple of rifles and a pistol. I keep them in my house. I keep them loaded, for to have and unloaded gun in the house is useless unless you want to hit an intruder with it. I keep them for self protection against the crook with a gun. I hope it never happens. I keep a sign on my door that says there are loaded weapons within. I hope the crook can read should one ever come to my door. Who knows? Maybe that's the reason none have ever come around.
The world is not the utopia we would like it to be. Most of us know how we should act and react to others. Unfortunately there are a lot of nuts out there. Keep yourself safe. No one is ever going to do it for you. Not in time anyway.
I don't remember when it became unsafe out there in public. Maybe it never was. I do recall in the early 1950's when a popular slogan appeared stating "Take the keys out of your car. Don't help a good boy go bad." I remember thinking at the time that perhaps good boys don't go around looking for cars with keys in them. That's the kind of thinking that got us here in the first place. Maybe we should get rid of that kind of thinking. Don't help a good country go bad. Take out the idiots first.
