Taneytown Maryland. Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley confirmed a Taneytown police officer shot and killed a man who according to the police version of the event the man who was killed was in possession of a hammer in his hand.
Edward L. Becker, 26, was pronounced dead at the Carroll Hospital Center from his gunshot wounds at the hands of a Taneytown police officer.
Maryland State Police report says Decker's parents call 911 to report their son was using a hammer to smash windows on his truck on Christmas night just after 8:30pm.
The police report said three Taneytown police officers responded to the emergency call. The three ofiicers "saw Becker walking down the street toward them."
The police officers told Becker to stop, put down his hammer and surrender. Decker decided to disobey the police officer's orders and the three police officers went behind their police cars when Becker was within arms reach of the police officers raising his hammer.
One of the police officers fired his weapon at Becker hitting him. The police officers gave Becker first aid at the scene and they call emergency medical personel who took Becker to the hospital where he died.
The name of the Taneytown police officer was not released. He is currently on administrative leave which is standard operating procedure.
The Taneytown police chief William E Tyler asked the Maryland State Police for assistance in the investigation of this case. Westminster Barack police responded to the call for help in this case.
The shooting is currently under investigation. When the investigation is complete the case will be turned over to the Carroll County State Attorney's Office who will decide if the officer who killed Becker should be charged with a crime or rule the shooting was in self defense and justified.
