Teotwawki — the end of the world as we know it, is littered with predictions that didn’t quite pan out. Just ask the folks who are still chewing through the food they stashed away at the time of the Killer Blob scare four years ago. That was when doomsters predicted CERN physicists would reduce the Earth to goo when they switched on their new particle smasher. In October, a German woman who feared the Earth would be sucked into oblivion in a black hole failed in her court bid to stop the work of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). Armageddon experts thus are cueing weary smiles for another non-TEOTWAWKI moment on December 21, supposedly named by the Mayan calendar as the Big One. “One thing all apocalyptic predictions have in common is that they are false. They never happen,” sighs Stephen O’Leary at the University of Southern California Palm oil has had to put up with doomsters for decades, except in this case, the apocalyptic predictions are about deforestation and climate change, which will bring about the end of the world in the words of the greenies and others of their ilk operating in the lunatic fringes! Or, if you were to believe French Senator Yve Daudigny, the end of good health, if you were to consume the saturated fat laden palm oil. Of course, the saturated fat gambit can be dismissed outright for it cannot withstand the scrutiny of the tons of published scientific studies that have shown that palm oil is, in fact heart friendly as the saturated fatty acids in the sn-1 and -3 position (typically found in palm oil) has very different biological consequences than animal fats such as lard and milk fats as the saturated fats are primarily found in the sn-2 position! (Vide: Donald J. McNamara, PhD: “Palm Oil and Heart Health: A case of Manipulated Perception and Misuse of Science” 240S Vol 29 No. 3(s) Journal of the American College of Nutrition) It is also the richest source of the heart friendly anti-oxidant tocotrienol, as well as other heart friendly phyto-nutrients such as Co Enzyme Q10, betacarotenes and other polyphenols. The second claim of deforestation is clearly built on manufactured evidence, as pointed out by Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo which noted that these campaigns are really designed to protect the EU’s own indigenous edible oilseed crops which are otherwise unable to compete with the hyper yielding palm oil! If nothing else, this allegation flies in the face of facts for Malaysia which had erstwhile been the world's largest producer of palm oil has managed to retain 59.5 percent forest cover despite intensive cultivation of palm oil for more than a hundred years! (CIA World Factbook 2011) What is most sinister of these predictions of doom is that the ones making the claims are aware that they are not true. So why would they then go on to line themselves up for the inevitable reckoning and the unpalatable eating of a fistful of dust when the truth eventually outs itself, as it is wont to do? The answer is simple. Money, loot and the gravy train that is laid out before them by a malefic and mean spirited Environmental Directorate of the European Commission (EC) ostensibly to encourage good environmental practices in developing countries, but in reality, as pointed out by Libertiamo, was a callous and underhanded move by the EC to stop the market onslaught against the EU’s own edible oilseed industries like rape and sunflower oil, which are helpless in the face of the rampantly hyper yielding palm oil. Instead of encouraging R&D to boost the yield of the EU’s edible oil industries or providing incentives for them to improve productivity and market penetration, the EC decides to take the low road to do precisely what its individual countries as signatories to the WTO treaty had pledged not to do – engage in surreptitious protectionist activities in the guise of environmental protection.
