First it was your search toolbar, then Google took over your browser, now its trying to take over your life right from your pocket. This is definitely the biggest news in tech for this week at least, the first ever device running on google’s android OS. Last November 2007, the company announced its Android mobile operating system, and 34 companies are on board to develop applications for the cell-phone platform as part of the Open Handset Alliance. The open software platform is hoped to go head-to-head with smartphone software from RIM, Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, and Palm. Theres already a lot of promising apps for the platform largely because of the android developer challenge (check out all awesome, and now rich, winners here) and also because this os is OPEN SOURCE. And because of this open source-ness the developers believe that this OS is pretty much future proof.
Another huge development in this story comes from another huge internet player, Amazon.com, which has just announced that the G1 will come preinstalled with its music store, thats over 6 friggin million worth of songs, DRM-free songs at that. This is another opportunity for the major music labels to take a piece of the iTunes pie if not overthrow the music store entirely. Check out the amazon press release here.
