Seventeen dead in Mexico attempted jailbreak

At least 17 people were killed when inmates tried to escape from a prison in northern Mexico late Tuesday, officials say.

Eleven inmates and seven guards were killed in killed in a shootout during jailbreak at a prison in the city of Gomez Palacio ,The inmates shot at guard towers in a jail as they tried to escape through a back wall and tunnel

"The inmates started to shoot with firearms toward the guard towers and the guard areas," the statement said.

Officials said the fighting broke out around 5 p.m. Tuesday as guards worked to stop the riot ,Guards initially fired in the air before returning the prisoners' fire directly.

Troops deployed and surrounded the prison in helping to stop to the attempted jailbreak and regained control of the prison

Mass jailbreaks have become a recurrent problem in Mexico .In September, more than 130 prisoners, many from the powerful Zetas cartel, escaped from from a prison in the border city of Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
