Herb, I think there may be many, because unfortunately, in the United States and other societies, there is a great mystery and a stigma attached to autism -- even in 2012. Adam, reportedly had Asperger's Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, which is not a mental illness but a neurobiological. neurodevelopmental disorder. Autism and mass murder are not synonymous; it appears he had a secondary diagnosis of "personality disorder."

It is apparent that Adam Lanza had taken on guns as an interest because of his mother's obsession with them. His interest, unfortunately, also turned into an obsession.

I read a report this morning that he may have "snapped", because his mother was going to institutionalize him:
