DICK’S Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the United States, currently halts selling of semi-automatic rifles in its over 500 stores nationwide. DICK’S also completely stops selling any type of gun in Newtown, Connecticut.

The decision was made by the sporting goods retailer after Adam Lanza shot dead 28 lives, including 20 children and Lanza’s mother, and Lanza himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14.

According to Huffington Post, DICK’S released the following official statement today.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”

Lanza reportedly tried to buy a gun from DICK’S in Danbury, 15-mile away from Newtown, according to KTLA.

DICK’S however declined the allegation, saying, “At this time, reports that the suspect visited one of our stores last week have not been confirmed by law enforcement,” in a statement to KTLA. “Based on our records, we can confirm that no firearms were sold to the suspect identified in this case,” the retail sports goods giant added, according to Huffington Post.

DICK’S also did not clear how long the gun-sale suspension would last, reported the ABC 2 News.
