More and more, the fashion industry is starting to open their eyes to the fact that stick thin is not the norm among the female population. Big designers are beginning to have certain standards for their models, and they are designing clothing for women with actual curves.
Tyra Banks is one high fashion model, who has posed for Victoria’s Secret and has graced many magazine covers, made it her job to speak out on the importance of featuring women of all shapes and sizes in fashion runways and in the pages of our favorite fashion magazines.
Another model who has taken a stand for plus-size models is Crystal Renn. She frequently is seen in Vogue, walksshows, and works with the biggest photographers like Steven Klein and Mert Alas.
The Ford and Wilhelmina modeling agencies, arguably the biggest modeling agencies that are out there, have also become leaders in the plus-size movement. They have plus-size divisions, and their main models, such as Lizzie Miller, Alyona Osmanova, and Marquita Pring, are booking mainstream jobs as opposed to jobs that are only targeted toward plus-size women.
Not all the modeling agencies are as enlightened as Ford and Wilhelmina, but this is bound to change over time as more people realize the potential and importance of plus-size modeling. Things have obviously changed from even a few years ago when seeing a plus-size model doing high-fashion anything was pretty much unheard of. But the times they are a-changing, and this change couldn’t come soon enough.
