Anti-virus guru John McAfee is back in the US, where he faces an uncertain fate after “metadata” revealed his hiding place in Guatemala.
He is wanted for questioning in Belize, where he maintains a beachfront estate, in the murder of a neighbor, Greg Faull.
McAfee had fled to Guatemala to avoid questioning, but when a photo was posted along with a blog, authorities were able to track him from geodata.
He blamed Vice Magazine, with whom he had relationship, for not removing the “metadata” that revealed his location, Boing Boing reported.
McAfee, who is in his mid-60s, said he faked a heart attack while being held in Guatemala, CNN reported. The goal was to delay his deportation to Belize, where he was false accused of murder and running a meth lab. His lawyer was able to arrange for his return to the US.
McAfee was expelled from Guatemala, where he had sought asylum, on a flight to Miami last night. Federal authorities declined to say what they were going to do with him.
It didn't take McAfee long to post on the Web, although at the same time he said he was being kept incommunicado. There are numerous ways to make calls via the Internet, including Skype. Here is his blog: http://www.whoismcafee.com. He noted he had been separated from his 20-year-old girlfriend Sam.
The Website offers a $25,000 reward for information on who killed Faull.
Meanwhile, Vice issued a lengthy statement saying it was investigating the incident to determine whether it had "f* up," but noting McAfee had conducted numerous interviews with media while on the road and also posted online.
McAfee is wanted for questioning of the murder of fellow American Faull on Nov. 11. He told media outlets he fled because he feared for his life if arrested in Belize.
It has been reported that McAfee and Faull, 52, quarreled over noise made by Faull’s 11 dogs, four of whom were found poisoned. Faull himself was found shot in the back of the head on the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye, near the homes of the two men.
The Miami Herald quoted McAfee as saying, in a blog, “I was escorted off the plaane [sic] by Customs and Immigration. ‘We are here to help you sir, the captain said. There were 10 agents and they whisked me to a safe place, asked some questions and then said ‘Where would you like to go?’ To a taxi stand. They did.” He said he had no choice but go to Miami because police put him on a plane.
