Famed Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar dies at 92

He was a sitar virtuoso, became a hippie musical icon in 1960s, an associate of the Beatles, Ravi Shankar has died. He was 92. Shankar introduced traditional Hindu music to Western audiences for more than eight-decade career.

Shankar’s death was confirmed by the prime minister's office and called him a "national treasure."

George Harrison, Beatles lead guitarist who had grown fascinated with the sitar tagged him as "the godfather of world music,” and helped him shot to global stardom in the 1960s.

A sitar is a musical instrument having a long necked, that uses a bulbous gourd for its resonating chamber and resembles a giant lute.

Ravindra Shankar Chowdhury was born April 7, 1920, in the Indian city of Varanasi.

Shankar was the estranged father of Norah Jones with New York concert promoter Sue Jones and also fathered another daughter Anoushka with Sukanya Rajan, who played the tanpura at his concerts.
