Nigerian oil baroness Folorunsho Alakija has surpassed Oprah Winfrey to become the richest black woman in the world. The 61-year-old richest lady who is worth at least $3.3 billion is the owner of Famfa Oil Limited. The Forbes magazine however ranked her with net worth at only $600 million in its November issue.

Alakija was born into a wealthy Nigerian family. She started her career as a secretary in an international merchant bank in Nigeria in the mid 70s. Alakija quit her job in the early 80s and went to England to study fashion designing. After returning back to Nigeria, she started her fashion label, Supreme Stitches for rich class which was readily accepted by the Nigerian elite class. Alakija is one of the pioneers of Nigerian fashion.

She switched to oil industry in 1993 and has achieved enormous success. Alakija currently owns at least 4100 million in real estate and a private jet worth $46 million. The married woman has four grown sons and a grandchild.
