For about eight years, I lived in an African American/Latino (mostly Mexican) neighbourhood. I found the diseases between the two groups were quite similar -- mainly due to a starchy diet and not enough exercise. Often when people are in survival mode, as in trying to pay the rent, utility bills, and buy food for the family with minimal resources, exercise is not a priority. Also, survival food, tends to be more filling (less need to eat often, due to little money), but lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables.
