Twelve security personnel were killed and several others injured in a suicide attack Saturday morning in Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
Reports from the troubled region said that a convoy of the army was on its way to Miranshah, the regional headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, from Bannu when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-packed vehicle into two military vehicles near Essa checkpoint, five kilometers away from Miranshah.
Ten security personnel and two civilians were reportedly killed in the attack as two military vehicles carrying over 20 personnel were destroyed. The dead and injured were removed to Bannu by helicopters and security forces cordoned off the area. The Bannu-Miranshah Road was also closed for traffic.
Although a peace agreement between the government and local militants in North Waziristan still exists, the local militants are getting offended by alleged US missile strikes from across the border and have started attacking the Pakistani security forces.
The local militants, however, did not claim responsibility for the latest attack.
