Only in stores for a little over a week, sales of the Nintendo’s Wii U videogame console are rocking. Shelves of the newest toy are emptied almost as soon as they are stocked. This is revitalizing news for the company, which has had several bland years since the original Wii was released in 2006.

Apparently, the videogame elder has more tricks up their sleeve. Another new Nintendo product is causing some waves in the gaming world. It’s red, black and Canadian. Most importantly, it’s cheap.

Canucks, meet the Wii Mini.

The small Wii Mini is, essentially, a stripped down Wii. The console is smaller, less breakable and comes with a cherry red Wii MotionPlus controller and Nunchuck. It plays the almost 1,500 Wii games and accepts any Wii accessory.

Costing $99.99, it’s “Big Fun for a Mini Price.”

“There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” according to Ron Bertram, the vice president and general manager of Nintendo of Canada, “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”

The Mini has no internet access (so it’s not Netflix compatible, for example) and it won’t play Game Cube games like the normal Wii. Unless you really prefer downloaded or old games, the lost features shouldn’t be much of a problem. Nintendo was never known for its stellar online features.

The Canadian Best Buy blog sees the Wii Mini as a public service, a populist device bringing videogames to the huddled masses:

“The Wii Mini aims to introduce (or reintroduce) a new generation to its original gaming options. For the last six years, the Wii has pushed the limits of what we had originally thought were possible to get out of our console games, and spawned a new generation of interactive gaming in general. From the first time a Wiimote was waved as a magic wand in the Harry Potter games, used as an eraser in Warioware, or the Wiimote and Nunchuk had to act the part of a runner’s legs in Madden Football, the Wii has been everything from a good system for party games, to a good source of exercise. Now, with this miniature version of the Wii, more gamers than ever can share in everything it has to offer.”

The Wii Mini is launching December 7th, only in Canada. There's no word yet on releases in other countries.
