During a long career with AP several new concepts were introduced. One was that to be fair and balanced we had to waste time trying to get a comment from someone just arrested, or his/her lawyer. That wasn't going to be possible. And we knew it. But we dutifully went ahead saying that neither Joe Criminal or his lawyer was available for comment. Of course as soon as we made the call we posted the disclaimer. We didn't give them to get our message and respond. We also were told constantly to include context (history, background, our own hard-earned experience). But in the vast majority of cases when we did that, it make the story less sexy, so the context was cut. And the biggest decision, rarely discussed at all, was whether to do a story at all. The usual defense was that other people are doing it. The problem is that all this relates to cutting costs. So for every ethical retreat that is blocked, the owners/publishers will find a way to appear ethical.

Thank you Mr. Prather. I really enjoyed reading that!
And that there was hardly a shred of trut in it made that much more entertaining.

I jest.

Enjoyed your article, Jack, and totally agree with your assessments.

It would have been fun if you had poked at Fox News a bit more, since they represent the most biased, unbalanced and unethical platform of any news organization in existence today.

The Fox News defense? Freedom of speech...

oh, and all those lucrative contracts their commentators are paid for spoon-feeding their willing audience big, steaming piles of misinformation and ignorance.
