This is why knowledge of history and culture is important in predicting future. In Egypt, as with most Muslim countries the population by and large holds Islamic values. Secular democrats are limited to the younger educated class.
I watched the Iranian revolution in the late 70s and feared Egypt will follow the same route. So far Egypt is doing better because it does not have a figure like the Ayatollah Khomeini, and Morsi does not have the following and clout Khomeini had. So I am still hopeful for Egypt.
