Dortmund take on third-placed Schalke at home on Saturday with a nine-point gap to close behind Bayern

Two weeks have been lost earlier this season due to internatiional contests, requiring the Bundesliga to get back on the pitch midweek. Spots for Champions League and Euro League competition continue to be in a tight race.

Bayern Muenchen holds a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, as the league moves toward the mid-season point. From second to fifth place Dortmund is ahead by one point of the remainder of the field.

SC Freiburg sits in sixth spot trailing the leaders by six points, but is only separated by three points by 14th spot Duesseldorf. Greuther Fuerth and Augsburg continue to trail in 17th and 18th spot respectively. The race for the top half couldn't be much tighter as matchday 14 kicks off.

Dortmund, Schalke and Frankfurt take to the pitch today. Dortmund is expected to defeat Duesseldorf at home, while Schalke should win its away game in Hamburg. In a Hessen derby Frankfurt hosts Mainz and should be able to take advantage of the home game advantage, however anything is possible in local derbies.

In the final match today, Hanover hosts Greuther Fuerth. Newcomer Fuerth has only won one contest in the previous 13 games and Hanover sits in eighth spot with 17 points. Hanover should come out on top, although the situation is desperate for Fuerth.

In Wednesday's competitions, FC Bayern travels to South Baden to take on Freiburg. With a win Bayern will be able to secure the fall or mid-season championship. Mario Gomez has recently returned from his lengthy injury and scored his first Bundesliga game last weekend. With two matchdays on tab this week, Jupp Heyncke is sure to rest some of his players.

Stuttgart hosts Augsburg and the Schwaben fans will be looking for an improved performance. Augsburg at the tail end of the league need a win. Can they do it in Stuttgart?

Fifth place Leverkusen hosts seventh place Werder Bremen. Can Kiessling and company defeat the Hanseaten for the three points? It should be a close contest, with a slight advantage to Leverkusen.

In the remaining Wednesday matches Gladbach hosts Wolfsburg, with the advantage to Gladbach, while Nuernberg hosts Hoffenheim. The Franken should win this contest.

The winners and losers of the next two matchdays will be decided by the teams that can handle the stress of three games in just one week. The competitors in the Champions League seem to have weathered the extra games well. By the end of next weekend the pattern should be well established.

Top contenders Bayern and Dortmund are set to face off this weekend for Matchday 15. How the two coaches handle their matchday 14 line ups will give an indication of their game plan for the weekend. Watch for the strategy employed by Klopp and Heynckes.
