The study concluded that the most important thing to watch for when consuming seafood is the balance between mercury and omega-3. Mercury was linked to a higher risk for heart attack while omega-3 fatty acids were linked to a decreased risk. The increased risk from mercury, however, was only noticeable at very high levels where the levels of omega-3 fatty acids were also very low.

Based on this information, researchers recommend eating fish two to three times per week, but to avoid consuming fish that is high in pollutants. Generally, this means limiting the amount of predatory fish that is eaten. These species are high in mercury because they eat other fish.
