, who played TV villain JR Ewing in the TV series “Dallas” for more than a decade has died at the age of 81, his family says. Hagman died in hospital on Friday afternoon suffering from cancer and cirrhosis of the liver, according to a family statement.
The family said Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most, He was surrounded by loved ones.
JR Ewing in his Stetson became one of the most distinguishing faces on TV screens across the world during his 13 years as the most calculating oil tycoon in Dallas. The TV series became one of the network’s top-rated programs, 356 episodes being watched by about 300 million people in 57 countries. This year it was revived.
His outspoken biography, Hello Darlin', detailed his youthful drug-taking exploits and revealed the extent of his 50-year battle with alcoholism. He consumed five bottles of champagne a day for years until he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in 1992. Three years later he underwent liver transplant and kept a photo of the organ donor above his mirror.
Hagman continued to drink covertly despite of his condition until in 2003 a further life-saving operation forced him to stop.
