Osama Bin Laden’s life in Abbottabad, Pakistan, remains shrouded in mystery and so is his burial at sea. According to emails exchanged among US military officers, none of the US sailors were allowed to witness Osama’s burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson.
The emails procured by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act contain the latest and the first disclosure of top-secret information about the Osama Bin Laden’s burial.
The emails released by the Department of Defense describe how the al-Qaida leader's body was washed, wrapped in a white sheet, and then immersed in the watery grave in a weighted bag.
Some of the mails mention that only a select group of officer at the USS Carl Vinson knew about the burial. The deceased body was buried according to Islamic procedures.
An email mentions, ‘A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased's body slid into the sea.’
Osama Bin Laden was killed by killed by Navy SEAL Team 6 in Abbottabad on May 4, 2011 and then immediately buried in the sea. The burial was done amid intense secrecy and the paucity of information regarding Osama’s death and burial is a reflection of the importance placed on operational security of the mission.
