The emails released by the Department of Defense describe how the al-Qaida leader's body was washed, wrapped in a white sheet, and then immersed in the watery grave in a weighted bag.

Some of the mails mention that only a select group of officer at the USS Carl Vinson knew about the burial. The deceased body was buried according to Islamic procedures.

An email mentions, ‘A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased's body slid into the sea.’
