I've had some interesting times since the election results turned into a disaster for the Republican Party. At first, I was trying to be accepting, but then a few things made me...
Ben, Interesting column, some good points and ideas. The Republicans should probably also do some thoughtful analysis including options and not start on something right away. There are often some pleasant surprises between a losing presidential election and the next mid-term elections (in this case in about 102 weeks) so they should be prepared.
I would entirely agree. The problem is in getting them to figure out the old ideas probably won't work as well. I'm reminded of the 1992 election when the Republicans basically refused to have anything to do with MTV and the internet, and lost the election because of it.
I never thought of the MTV issue. It does, though, seem to be a very good metaphor for keeping up with the times. After Iraq I, Bush addressed Congress and the Dems joined the Reps in foot stomping and shouting BUSH! BUSH!, I always attributed his loss to three factors: Rescinded his "no new taxes" pledge, the recession that had just ended but statistically but not on Main Street, and Ross Perot.
