CIA director David Petraeus shocked the country by resigning from his post because of an extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell, the co-writer with Vernon Loeb of his biography.

The scandal and the resultant resignation have shaken one of the most powerful organizations in the country - the CIA. According to some reports, the retired general handed in his resignation after an investigation into his extramarital affair had been launched by the FBI.

David Petraeus is a retired four-star general known for taking charge of the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. He joined the CIA in September of 2001, the same year and month in which the terrorist attacks took place.

According to reports, the affair between David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell was discovered during an FBI investigation. The relationship was discovered between the two after monitoring Petraeus` emails. The FBI was alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account and that is a matter of grave concern.

After this affair came to light, David Petraeus himself handed over his resignation personally to President Obama and it got accepted.

After resigning, David Petraeus told CIA employees in a statement that he had resigned and that he was extremely guilty of what he had done. Petraeus said that he had shown “extremely poor judgment" in the affair. "Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."

David Petraeus is married to Holly Petraeus for the past 38 years and the marriage was going strong. However, it is not clear yet what repercussions this scandal will now have on his marriage.

Petraeus met his wife, Holly, when he was a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. N.Y. Holly was the daughter of the academy superintended and the two fell in love there. The Petraeus also have two children together and their son even led an infantry platoon in Afghanistan.

Even President Obama said words of praise for the former director. According to a report by msn.com, President Obama said that the retired general had provided "extraordinary service to the United States for decades" and given a lifetime of service that "made our country safer and stronger." Obama called him "one of the outstanding general officers of his generation."

For the time being, Deputy Director Michael Morell will serve as the acting director of the CIA.
