The northeast corridor was hit by Superstorm Sandy last Monday and Tuesday. Affecting a part of the country stretching from Washington, DC, to New England, it was the southern New Jersey shore and New York City that seemed to suffer the worst damage.
The megastorm caused major flooding in New York City, the surrounding suburbs and Long Island. All tunnels entering Manhattan, with the exception of the Lincoln Tunnel, were closed, the New York Stock Exchange closed for two days, the New York Marathon was canceled and numerous homes and businesses were shut down or destroyed by fire or flooding. Over 100 homes in Breezy Point and Queens were left destroyed and many neighborhoods were ordered to evacuate. The city estimates that economic losses across the region are estimated to be at least $18 billion.
As of Sunday, all New York City buses are running as scheduled. The J and M subways have been restored, the F and D trains have resumed near-normal service, and the 1 train now goes south to 14th Street. The PATH train is still closed, NJ Transit has limited service to Raritan Valley, New Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor lines, all of the major airports are open and the Metro-North is running on much of the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines. All ferries and trams are running, too.
In a statement released Friday, ad:tech announced that the New York event would still run as scheduled. The Javits Center was opened this past weekend to host an expo for the marathon and is good to go.
“New York is a resilient city, and its people and businesses have endured hardships before. Each and every time they’ve come back stronger. Mayor Bloomberg has made a point of encouraging businesses to get back to work as soon as they’re able and we feel an obligation to keep our commitments to the industry, the city and the ad:tech eco-system,” the statement said.
