The Republican presidential nominee’s son, Matt Romney, is in Russia in a bid to seek out Russian investors for his business based in California. Matt’s visit to Moscow comes days beforeis to wind up his presidential campaign, during which he has pledged to take harder standing against the Russians. However, Matt also reportedly delivered his father’s friendly message to Moscow.
Reports suggest that the second-oldest son of the Republican presidential nominee held meetings with dozens of Russian investors in Moscow and made attempts to persuade them to invest in his real estate business, Excel Trust, which holds stakes in several shopping malls across the US.
After the strictly friendly visit of Matt Romney to Moscow had started, the firm said that it plans to find international investors to put money into the expansion of the real estate business and Matt’s visit to Russia is a move solely in that direction.
Mr. Matt’s trip to Russia, just days before the Election Day, highlights the difficult relationship between the Romney family’s business and their politics.
It is pertinent to mention here that Mitt Romney has repeatedly accused Obama of being too soft on Moscow, declaring Russia the United States’ No. 1 geopolitical enemy. Mitt Romney recently vowed that he would deal with the Russian government with “more backbone” if elected.
The Republican presidential nominee has also blasted Moscow’s attack on domestic opposition and non-conformance to the international community’s actions against Iran and Syria. Mitt Romney has also accused Obama of not taking enough actions to safeguard human rights practices and standards in Russia and for supporting a nuclear weapons reduction accord with Russia.
Although the Russian Embassy in Washington has said that it has no information about Matt Romney’s visit, according to the NY Times, while in Moscow, Matt told a Russian known to convey a message to Mr. Putin that regardless of the US presidential campaign oratory, his father intends to establish good relations with Moscow if elected the president of the US.
Matt Romney, who has frequently appeared on his father’s presidential campaign trail, has graduated from Harvard Business School. He started his professional career at Excel Realty Holdings in 2003. His father has used the US relation with Russia as a focus of his campaign to criticize President Obama, who stabilized the US relationship with Russia after resetting the US foreign policy.
