After weeks of auditions, boot camps, and judge’s homes the live performances have finally arrived on “The X Factor”. The 16 singers chosen at the judge’s homes perform live for the first time but not for fan votes; on Thursday’s show the judges – LA Reid,, , and Simon cowell - will be picking the top 12 finalists that will be competing for fan votes.
The first live show is also the first time fans will get a chance to see the new co-hosts for season two – Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez.
Changing from taped shows to live wasn’t the only change on “The X Factor” – Demi Lovato and Cece Frey both sported new hair colours. Demi is now a brunteet and Cece is now a blonde.
The theme for the first week was Made in America.
The show kicked off with Paige Thomas wearing a skin tight body suit and a spikey headpiece. LA called it a dramatic opening that Paige handled with poise, but he wasn’t sure about the song choice. Britney called Paige outrageous and a true star. Simon said Paige did great and just nailed it. Demi said Paige did a fantastic job and it was an amazing way to open the show.
Mario announced that “The X Factor” has teamed up with Pepsi to produce the first music video for the winner that will appear at the Grammy Awards.
Arin Ray performed the classic “Keep Me Hanging On” but there was an annoying noise or sound effect of some kind all during the song that was very distracting. LA said Arin nailed it and had a creative song choice but his vocals were not up to par. Demi said that she couldn’t hear the vocals for all of the screaming girls but noted the performance felt stiff. Simon thought Britney put too much around Arin but he did have that swag and was overall impressed. Britney called Arin a little genius up there and she loved it.
Demi was not the only one having trouble hearing the vocals. The vocals on every performance was drowned out, not by the screaming girls but by the music tracks. At times it was even impossible to understand the lyrics being sung.
LA’s first singer was David Correy who often spoke of how he wanted to find his birth mother through his music. Reportedly a woman has come forth laying claim to the title and at some point the two will get together to meet and confirm with DNA testing. Britney said David was amazing and felt David a lot. Demi noted that David got the crowd going. Simon noted it was an interesting song choice but felt the performance was a bit manic verging on desperate at times. LA said David sounded really good and it felt right.
The first group to perform was the trio of siblings Sister C. LA said it was good. Britney called the performance interesting and a great performance. Demi noted the group had a unique sound but was expecting more; adding that the performance felt a little stiff. Simon called it a fantastic performance with the vocals on the money.
LA called Jannel Garcia’s performance a complete surprise; adding that she was stunning and had a great song choice. LA said that he was convinced that she could win. Britney said that Jannel rocked it out and loved everything about the performance. Simon said Jannel just defined the theme made in America, but felt that Demi was turning Jannel into a clone of herself. Demi said that she had chills and could see Jannel performing in an arena somewhere.
Performing the Train hit “Hey, Soul Sister” LA said Diamond White was really strong. Demi called it a great song choice; adding that Diamond had one of the most powerful voices in the competition but felt Diamond was a little reserved. Simon said that the talent so far has blown him away; adding that Britney has done a really good job with Diamond and could see a massive improvement since the last time they saw her. Britney simply called the performance amazing.
Britney said that Vino Alan’s performance was really good but it felt a little bored. Demi said that she could see the passion but had a hard time seeing him as a pop star. Simon said that he really like Vino and he had an incredible voice; but said the song choice was completely wrong. LA told Vino that he was going to be fine.
The Hip-Hop group Lyric 145 is one of the groups that the judges created from the auditions. LA said that he loved them and they were an amazing group but felt the song took the soul out of them. Britney said that she was genuinely entertained. Demi said it was so much fun but had to agree with LA. Simon thought that they were sensational.
Cece Frey with a new look performed “Because the Night”. LA called the performance really strong and he could see that she put a lot of work into it; but added that it lacked a little to be desired vocally. Britney said that overall the performance was great but also felt the vocals were weak. Simon noted that Cece was fearless and interesting but not the best vocals he had heard; adding that she was someone they needed in the competition. Demi agreed that Cece could have done better vocally but called her a pop star.
Britney said Tate Stevens wows her every time he performs; adding that he was amazing. Saying that it was a little bored in the beginning, Demi said that Tate gave her chills. Simon called Tate a good honest man but the song choice was not good; he added that Tate was a keeper. LA said Tate did really good and agreed he was a keeper.
LA said that he loved and believed in young Beatrice Miller. Demi was really impressed by her performance; adding that she performed with so much feeling. Noting that there was a gap in the market for someone like Beatrice, Simon thought there were some pitch issues. Britney called Beatrice a a true star; adding that she loved the performance.
LA calls the flamboyant Jason Brock Mr. Entertainment and Britney agreed that Jason was entertaining but felt he could have chosen a better song. Demi said that while Jason made the song his own she felt he could have made a better song choice. Saying that he liked Jason, Simon called the performance utterly horrendous; saying everything about it was wrong. LA enjoyed it; saying he had fun.
Formerly the Lilas, the five solo artists that the judges put together as a group have changed their name to 1432. LA called the performance very talent show and very karaoke; he added that their mentor failed them but said there was hope. Britney said she was pleasantly surprised; adding that the girls drew her in. Demi felt that only one of the girls shined and the performance didn’t click for her. Saying that there was indeed work to do, Simon said the girls were fantastic.
LA congratulated Willie Jones on being very entertaining; saying the performance was adequate but feels that Willie will be around. Britney called Willie a star who was amazing and entertained her. Simon called the performance silly and he didn’t get it; adding that he didn’t think Willie was taking himself seriously or showed off his voice. Demi said that Willie’s mentor was 20 years old and knew what people liked.
Khloe kept challenging the judges and putting them on the spot to answer questions about their comments.
LA noted that Carly Rose had a beautiful voice but felt that she wasn’t having fun. Demi said Carly had one of the best voices in the competition but felt the performance was not believable; Demi added that maybe it wasn’t Carly’s time now but she did have a future in music. Simon didn’t agree with Demi, saying he was uncomfortable with the song; adding that it would be criminal if Carly were to be eliminated. Britney said the vocals were amazing and Carly did a great job.
The final performance of the night was from the group Emblem3. LA said the boys got it right this time; calling them unbelievable and America’s next pop sensation. Britney called the boys amazing and adorable. Demi said the boys made her swoon and couldn’t look at them. Simon was impressed; adding that they should all remember this night because they were looking at future pop stars.
Speaking on the entire night, Simon said that there were three or four incredible performances and future stars.
On Thursday’s show eight acts will be safe, and eight will have to sing for their lives with four ot them being eliminated.
