Israel accused Syria of allowing weapons to pass across the Syria-Lebanon border

200 killed as Syria truce collapses

JET STRIKES DAMASCUS AS REBEL CLASHES WITH KURDS RAISE FEARS OF NEW FRONT. Fighting raged across Syria and an air raid struck near Damascus yesterday after a ceasefire for Eid Al Adha holiday fell apart, with more than 200 killed since it was due to take effect. As clashes between the armed forces and rebels continued, a warplane struck a building in a rebel-held area east of Damascus killing eight. Heavy gunfire and the sound of mortar bombs could be heard for the second consecutive day along the Turkey-Syria border near the Syrian town of Haram, a witness said. “The truce is dead,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, director Rami Abdul Rahman, said. The Observatory said 146 people were killed in bombings and fighting on Friday and fresh violence yesterday killed at least another 48 people. A rebel group in the north said it was holding a Lebanese television journalist because his reports were “not compatible with the revolution”. Fida Itani’s employer, LBCI, confirmed his capture and said he was being held by a man known as Abu Ebrahim whom activists have denounced as a simple criminal. There were concerns of a new front opening after reports said that clashes between rebels and Kurdish militia on Friday had left 30 dead and some 200 captured.
