Zombie bees are spreading all throughout the USA just in time for Halloween. The zombie bee phenomenon was first noted in the United States in 2008.
A parasite known as the scuttle fly (Apocephalus borealis) attacks bees by injecting its eggs into them. The eggs then hatch inside of the bee, which eventually causes for the bees to die.
The spread of this parasite could be potentially damaging to the entire world since America is known as the world's "Bread Basket." From an agricultural standpoint, the shortage of bees results in less pollination, which leads to less crops being produced nationwide. If the scuttle fly is not dealt with immediately, then this parasite could gradually cause a worldwide famine.
