Polling data that had been showing a 5-to-6-point lead for Mitt Romney has shrunk as of Thursday, indicating that the momentum the Romney team asserts is gone.

There are other signs that the Romney gains after the first presidential debate may be fading. Several polls that previously showed a lead for Romney are now even or putting the Romney team behind President Obama.

Obama is showing strength among early voters in Ohio who have already cast ballots, by about a 2-to-1 margin over Romney, according to a Time poll. Ohio is a key battleground state that many pollsters believe is a Romney must-win for his path to 270 electoral votes and the White House.

The Obama tide is also sweeping downstate-ballot Republicans aside in the fight to control the Senate. Democrats are currently favored to keep control, with most polls showing a 52-to-48 advantage.
