The mother and grandmother of a 9-year-old girl who claimed she was bullied by two fourth grade boys has been arrested on charges that the mother slapped and cursed at the boys, while the girl's grandmother is accused of screaming at them on board a school bus, authorities said.
The girl’s mother Rebecca Sardoni, 28, of Toms River, and her mother, 51-year-old Stephanie Sardoni, of Beachwood, were arrested Friday and released on summonses.
Witnesses said the two women boarded a school bus Friday morning bound for East Dover Elementary School and asked for a boy they claimed had been harassing Rebecca Sardoni’s daughter on the bus, Toms River Police Chief Michael G. Mastronardy said.
Rebecca Sardoni according to several students on the bus, cursed at the boy and slapped him and a boy seated next to him while Stephanie Sardoni shouted at the two boys, Mastronardy said.
Charged with simple assault, criminal trespass and making terroristic threats was Rebecca Sardoni and Stephanie Sardoni was charged with criminal trespass.
Rebecca Sardoni told Associated Press that she felt sorry boarding the bus, but she denied hitting any of the boys. She said she was upset, she wasn’t crazy and she doesn’t put her hands on her own kids. She further said that her daughter is upset and nervous about going to school Monday. She is planning sending her daughter to a new school but she knows for sure that her daughter won’t be taking the bus anymore.
"It's crazy that this got blown into me doing something wrong — me and my family — when this is my daughter that is the victim," Rebecca Sardoni told the AP.
She said, school officials ignored her complaints that her daughter who is also in fourth-grade, had been verbally and physically abused by four students, that’s why she took matters into her hands. Her mother was merely standing at the front of the bus with the driver.
The boys were treated in the Toms River Regional Schools’ clinic for cuts to their mouths. One of the boys was brought by his parents to a local hospital for treatment of a neck injury, Mastronardy said.
One of the boys’ stepfather told the AP his stepson had a cut on his lip after Rebecca Sardoni smashed his head against the bus window.
