The two US presidential candidates are going to make their final debate today. This debate is going to be about the US foreign policy. Pakistan is a major US foreign policy issue in recent times. US needs Pakistani help to fight war against terror in Afghanistan.

America has been waging a war against terror in Afghanistan for the last decade. This war is against Taliban and the al-Qaida leadership residing in Afghanistan and the lawless areas of tribal region of Pakistan.

US invasion in Afghanistan resulted in the ouster of the Taliban regime in October 2001. After the sacking of the Taliban regime, the US concentrated its efforts towards the nation building of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has been a stage for war since 1979 invasion of USSR. The infrastructure of Afghanistan has been completey torn apart by the three decades of war in Afghanistan. After the US invasion, Afghanistan needed a constitution and the institutions of the government to become a republic.

The US is trying to build an army for the security of the Afghan territory. US plans to leave Afghanistan in 2014. The Afghan security forces are going to take care of the country after the US forces leave Afghanistan.

Pakistan is helping US and NATO forces since 2001 in Afghanistan by providing supply lines to the troops. The military and other supplies to Afghanistan pass from Pakistan.

But at the same time, Pakistani establishment is playing another game in Afghanistan. Pakistan is accused of harbouring al-Qaida and Taliban leadership in the poorly controlled Tribal areas of Pakistan.

Retired Admiral Mike Mullen accused Pakistan of using Haqqani Network as a veritable arm to carry out terrorist acts in Afghanistan. US secretary of state Hillary Clinton declared Haqqani Network a terrorist organization recently.

As a result of declaring Haqqani Network a terrorist organization, Pakistan can be declared a terrorist country harbouring a terrorist organization.

Pakistan is a recipient of a huge military and civil aid of US. If Pakistan is declared a terrorist country by the next or current US administration, then the US aid to Pakistan will be stopped.

The spy agency of Pakistan called ISI (Interservices Intelligence) is accused by US of having links with the Haqqani Network and using this terrorist network to carry out acts of terror in Afghanistan.

US and NATO troops are indirectly killed by ISI through its links with the Haqqani Network. The current or next US government has to decide about the fate of Pakistan as to declare it a terrorist country or not.

Recently, two of the members of the US consulate in Peshawar got injured in a suicide attack. They are in a critical condition.

The two presidential candidates have to come up with a strategy on how to deal with Pakistan.
