A massive blast was caused by car bomb ripped through in a street in central Beirut during rush hour on Friday, killing at least two people and wounding 46, pouring out into the streets in the most serious blast this city has seen in years witnesses and Lebanon's state-run news agency said.
The state news agency said eight people dead. At least 78 people were wounded.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw heavy damage as smoke rose from the area and human body parts were seen scattered on the roads while ambulances rushed to the scene helped bloodied people , the blast occurred in the mostly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood during rush hour, while many parents were picking up children from school.
"I was standing nearby in Sassine Square and I heard a big explosion and I ran straight to it," resident Elie Khalil told The Associated Press.
It hasn't clear yet the motive behind the blast and its target in Lebanon's divided community but it occurred at a time of heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the Syria conflict.
