Iranian nuclear threat keeps the United States and Israel on their toes. Different policies and defense strategies are being devised to counter the threat from the Islamic Republic and eliminate its nuclear facilities. For the purpose, the United States and Israel have prepared to stage a major joint defense drill later this month. The defense exercise will be held in Israel, where American and Israeli anti-missile defense systems would be used and checked to respond to any threat from the enemy. Around 1,000 American troops are en route to Israel for the exercise. The drill is being dubbed as a major event in years and helpful to both the US and Israeli leaders.
The drill comes amid high international tensions over the controversial nuclear program of Iran. And also, countdown for elections in both the countries has started. Presidentand Israeli Prime Minister feel that they can clinch support of the public by showing them their commitment to crush the Islamic Republic if it dares to attack Israel or develop atomic bomb. Obama wants to secure the support of Jewish community in the US through issuing statements against Iranian nuclear program and supporting the stance of Israel.
It may be pertinent to mention here that the American Jewish community plays an important role in defeat and victory of any US presidential candidate. Therefore, Republican candidatehas also been issuing big statements against Iran and in support of Israel. He has even vowed to go extra mile to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. On the other hand, Barack Obama still wishes to resolve the issue through diplomacy, dialogue and sanctions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pressing the US to help Israel attack the nuclear facilities of Iran, but has failed to garner the needed support. Benjamin now wants to capitalize on the recent defense drill and close ties with the US.
However, US Lieutenant General Craig Franklin, in-charge of the drill, tried to dispel the impression that the defense drill was related to national elections or the controversial nuclear program of Iran. He said this while elaborating on the drill to reports on telephonic briefing. It may be pertinent to mention here that the recent drills are being held after a drone war has been apparently launched on Israel by Iran. Earlier this month, Israel shot down a drone in its territory for violating its airspace. Later,, the head of Lebanese-based militant outfit , which is also backed by Iran, claimed that his outfit had launched the drone.
On the other hand, Iranian officials are also claiming to have built a long-range indigenous drone that can carry missiles and bombs.
