Human have been daunted by the advent of technology. One of the reasons for this is because people are continuously questing on how to make life better. Professionals thought of technology as answer to problems on various fields of Physical Science and even in Social Science, and the truth is they were successful on this thrust.
People behind the technology have experienced a rocky road to materialize their thrust to invent and to discover. It took them many years to accomplish one task, and sometimes took more than a man to finish one invention and discovery. Hence, the birth of technology is not like of that a flip of finger tips of a magician—where everything will exist right after.
Since it is innate to human to search on providing their own needs, then probably there are a lot of things to expect from technology in the future. We are not surprised on this, but for sure we will be surprised on what technology will emerge in the future and how it will affect us.
Two Shades of ICT
The grassroot level of the birth of technology is to provide the necessities of the people. Consequently, this concept is already a niche to consider that technology was born to give desired or good benefits to human.
In Physical Science, it’s been apparent on the move of many scientists and inventors to find cure in most of diseases which can be solved through various inventions of medical machines like robots. People for sure, are looking forward on curing disease like cancer, and at present those in the field of medicine are starting to seek ways to help the cancer patients.
New technology like the microchip, which was implanted inside the nerve of a human, will help the doctor to detect health problems of a person who has the microchip. There are some countries that are now using a robot, which was maneuvered by the doctor, when operating a patient. One thing is for sure, there a lot of things to expect from the technology and its implication to medicine.
But Social Science is not left behind from using technology to explore human needs and necessities. For instance in communication, we all witnessed how we communicate to others using a snail mail, in which it takes a long time before one received the mail. The delay of sending a mail would have been the problem that people saw, and from there, cellphones with a text message feature was invented, followed by the introduction of electronic mail or e-mail.
Indeed the problem on the delay of message has been solved, but human are not contented to just receive a message through text or email. Human are continuously inventing various gadgets which is evident to the dramatic changed on cellphone models. This gadget began to have a video call service alongside with conformity with telecommunication company. For instance, when cellphone with camera was invented, Globe and Smart, the two giant telecommunication companies in the Philippines, started to agree with the video call service on the selected cellphone models. From this a more-in-one feature of cellphone model was offered. By the year 2000, aside from call, text and video call, users can now surf the internet through their cellphone, a feature which was first introduced in computer.
From these examples, we can actually picture on how communication technology changed from analog to digital. If this became possible, then imagine how technology will be in the future. For sure, future will bring a slew of new products that will change the way we communicate with each other and with machines.
We can get idea on what will be our future from some Sci-Fi movie. Visualize how life would be talking to someone in a hologram, or a robot once programmed can be like a real human. This might sound unreal, but with the creative mind of human to invent and to discover, things like these will become possible. Just take a look at that we all started from a primitive age and see how our society changed from a nomadic lifestyle to a ‘teckie’ one.
From most aspects of society, technology is very vital. For example, through communication devices, reporting of weather forecast became easier. Nowadays, having access on the weather updates became much easier through the help of mass media which is using the technology (e.g. television, radio, computer and the likes). However, meteorological offices are also using advanced tools to monitor the weather and the weather systems that may affect a certain area.
Similarly to communication gadget is a car. Just look at how we come up with a car, wherein its concept just started from a cart pulled by a cattle or horse during the early age of Pueblo Indians in Arizona, and from that we now have a lot of vehicles.
We head on for many years from maneuvering everything in manual throughout automation. Best example for this is the counting of vote during the election. In the Philippines, before manual counting took for about less or more than two months, but when PCOS machine is used in less than a month, elected officials were already revealed.
On the other hand, we knew more of the desired effects of technology, since these are what technology is all about. But of course, emerging of new technology is tailed with some undesired effects. These undesired effects will be rooted from the irresponsible used of technology.
Among its undesired effect is evident to most of the students. There are some who will just play computer games instead of answering their homeworks or to have an advance study of their lessons. ICT has been the answer of most of the educators to make learning more conducive to the students, but it seems like the students were more tempted to forget of their study just to suffice their temptation on playing with their gadgets. There is nothing wrong to play with their gadgets but there should be a control. The problem on the unwise used of technology will become more rampant if the students will not be properly guided on how to use technology. Besides it’s a matter of allotting enough time on studying and playing with the gadgets.
Health will be more at risks among the users of technology. Now that most of the devices in which we are inclined with are producing radiation in which too much exposure to it is harmful to our body. Doing workout or exercise will also be forgotten because some of us spent hours in front of the computer, tablet or with other gadgets. Technology might be entertaining for us, but too much of using it can actually resulted to bad effect on our health.
Also, criminals will be using the technology to take advantage of others. Cybercrime is a serious problem which cannot be solved easily because the internet or the worldwideweb is a wide network in which legislation of a certain country is not easy to implement once a cybercrime is committed.
For instance, the ‘I Love You Virus’ which was made by a Filipino became popular internationally because it hacked the system of the U.S. government. The Filipino was not punished by the law because the law on cybercrime is not yet enacted in the county. Besides, the US could not also sue the Filipino because the jurisdiction of their law is only on their country and not on the Philippines. But we are not after with the legislation of the law as for its jurisdiction, instead to picture how one can use the technology to do crime.
Other bogus can be made through the use of technology specifically those which used the internet. Among these are cyber bullying, cyber sex, monetary profit, show emotional needs, political motives, and serious psychiatric illness. These are the common motives of the cyber criminals why they committed false use of the technology.
Let’s say if one wanted to make fun of others he may bullied a person on the internet through using a Facebook account or any other means of social media. Or, one may burst anger and revenge to someone by stating a slanderous statement towards a person by using the social media.
However, the worst case scenario that might happen is to use the technology to release a sexual urge or to commit the so-called cyber sex. This is rampant nowadays especially now that it is the easiest way to gain profit. There are times that a syndicate runs this kind of monkey business in which those of young age (from 7-12 age group) are the ones serve as ‘submissive’ in a cyber sex. Also, pedophiles use chat rooms to allure small children and promise them with a better living. These people are taking advantage of the innocence of the child.
A fraud can also be committed in the internet. With the wide access on the web, those cyber criminals can have an easy access to commit a scam. For instance, the ‘salami attack’, this fraud is called ‘salami’ because a cyber criminal will get a portion (—thing done when getting a thin slice portion of the salami sausage) of the saving from his first victim’s bank, and another portion to other potential victims without making it very obvious. That small portion of the saving once summed up is already a big amount.
Another alarming exploit of the internet are criminals use it for meeting co-conspirators, hackers use it for discussing their exploits / sharing the techniques and drug trafficking.
Generally, the desired effect of technology to human is that it makes the life of human better. Gone are the days that human performed many tasks in manual, in which productivity is at stake. However, because of technology where everything is automated, human can now produced many outputs in just short span of time. Technology’s other desired effect is to help human in curing diseases. These are the effects that we have seen from the technology several years ago, and we should still expect these in the near future. It’s just that, the only difference is technology of the future is expected to be more innovated.
The discussed undesired effects were experienced already by many, and there have been reported cases like these. But what these effects tell us about the future of emerging technologies? Simple only, that intentionally there are people who will be using technology to augment the crime to be committed in the near future. Criminals might not be stopped in doing this crime but people should be aware on how to use the technology which they thought give them a bright future. Additionally, as a user of technology we should be responsible enough on how to use it now that there will more to expect on our technology.
We can anticipate that emerging technology in the near future will make our life better or even more better for there will be more inventions which will be of big help in our daily lives— a technology which extends its benefits from the tiny detail of our lives. Of course we have to expect also that alongside the bright future that we expect is the dark side of technology. (By Batch Natano)
