This week on “Dancing with the Stars” it was anight of guest judges, the first 10’s of the season, and performances of dances never before seen in the Ballroom.
Grammy and Emmy Award winning performerjoined Len Goodman, , and at the judge’s table this week. Reality competition fans may recognize Abdul from her years as a judge on “American Idol”, “The X Factor”, and “Live to Dance”. Abdul got her start as a Laker girl and went on to choreograph dances for some of the biggest names in entertainment. She also had a number of hit songs in the eighties.
Performing dances that have rarely or never been danced in the Ballroom before, the nine All Star couples were allowed to add lifts in their performances. The couples are performing dances that were chosen for them by their fellow compeitiors during last week’s results show.
First on the dance floor was Kristie and Maks with a Charleston to “42nd Street”. Kristie started her dance by jumping out of a cake to a surprised Maks. Len said Kristie turns Monday’s into fun days. Paula noted that it was the way to start off the night; adding that Kristie danced wonderfully. Bruno called Kristie a mad woman and he loved her for it; adding that Kristie started out likeand ended up like Shelly Winters. Carrie Ann ladi that Kristie looked stunning, saying it was the best she ever looked; Carrie Ann added that Kristie’s dance was fabulous and entertained them. Kristie and Maks earned a score of 30 points.
Performing a rock and roll dance to “At the Hop”, Bristol and Mark chose to leave the animal costumes alone and just dance. Paula said that she could definitely see improvement and noted that Bristol is starting to have some fun. Bruno said that Bristol is finally pumping it, staying focused and htting all of the steps. Carrie Ann said Bristol did a great job and was beginning to blossom. Len noted that Bristol came out and gave it her all with speed and energy; he added that it was Bristol’s best dance so far. With a score of 32 points, Bristol and Mark ensured themselves of not having the lowest score this week like they have in the past three weeks.
Donned in a blue fur coat that hostsaid looked like a cross between Cookie Monster and the Lion King, Sabrina and Louis performed a trick filled Disco routine that paid homage to the seventies New York club Studio 54. Bruno called Sabrina a dancing diva who was vibrant and alive. After saying that they wanted to see something different from Sabrina, Carrie Ann noted that Sabrina definitely showed them something new this week. Len said the performance was fabulous and he loved it.. Paula noted that the homage to Studio 54 was spot on; adding the performance was fantastic. Sabrina and Louis earned a score of 35.5.
Taking on a dance that she had never done before, Emmitt and Cheryl performed the Bolero – the Cuban dance of love. Cheryl solicited some help with her dance this week. Carrie Ann called the performance beautiful with graceful lines; adding that there was nothing better than a big man getting sexy. Len admitted that he was worried about the dance but noted Emmitt performed it with lovely fluidity, was a little raunchy, had clean lifts, and was fabulous. Paula called the performance exquisite and sensual; adding that Emmitt was a sexy beast that captivated them and left them wanting much more. Bruno said the mood was steamier than August in Louisiana; adding that Emmitt’s performance had smooth masculine lines. Emmitt and Cheryl earned a score of 36 points for their Bolero.
Giles and Peta performed the first ever Bollywood routine on “Dancing with the Stars”. Peta enlisted the help of an expert to help her with the dance. In their video package Giles said that they were still struggling with the dance 48 hours before performance time. Len liked it saying Giles gave the dance total commitment and was fabulous. Paula imitating Bruno called the performance smoldering and spicy. Bruno called Giles a Bollywood superstar with stylistic perfection. Carrien Ann said the performance was beyond belief and fantastic; adding thathad nothing on Giles. Giles and Peta earned a near perfect score of 39.5 for their dance.
Melissa and Tony performed a Jitterbug to “Cat on a Hot Tim Roof”. Paula said the pair looked like they had been dancing together for a long time; adding the footwork was impeccable and they nailed it. Bruno called Melissa fearless and fierce; adding that she didn’t miss a beat and was an amazing dancer. Carrie Ann noted that Melissa made everything look easy; adding that Tony’s choreography was exceptional. Len called Melissa a class dancer who was clean and correct. He called the dance more glitterbug than jitterbug. Melissa and Tony earned 37 points for their dance.
Shawn and Derek performed the only truly Ballroom dance with a Mambo to the music of Santana. Bruno called the performance mesmerizing, sexy, and out of this world; he added that the show keeps getting better. Carrie Ann said the pair was on fire; adding that she would be a little scared if she were one of the other couples. Len liked the dance; calling it a brilliant performance. Paula called Shawn a sexy young lady who was elegant and down and dirty. Paula called it her favourite dance. Shawn and Derek also scored a near perfect score with 39.5 points.
Apolo and Karina were given the Hip-Hop routine. Karina had never performed any kind of Hip-Hop dance before and was not happy about the choice. She called in some help – a Hip-Hop expert – to give her a hand this week. Karina slipped and fell during the dance and was extremely upset thinking that she had ruined it for Apolo. Carrie Ann applauded them for the dance and loved the way they had done it; adding that they nailed it. Len called Apolo smoking, fantastic, and gave it his all; adding that he didn’t even see Karina. Paula said that Apolo had swagger and gave them kudos for their performance. Bruno noted that Apolo had attitude, did a great job, and even made the running man look good. Apolo and Karina scored 34.5 points for their dance.
The final performance of the night was from Kelly and Valentin who performed a Contemporary dance to “Fix You”. Kelly danced with a broken toe. Len loved the contrast in the dance; calling Kelly the biggest revelation for him. Paula said it was an amazing routine and they did an amazing job. Bruno noted that theirs was the hardest dance and they did it beautifully; adding that he believed every minute of it and it was a great achievement. Carrie Ann said the pair laid their heart out calling the performance stunning with gorgeous lines. Kellyand Valentin earned 37.5 points for their dance.
On Tuesday’s results showand perform a duet and the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers perform. The two couples with the highest total scores will choose their teams for the freestyle team dance.
Next week the eight couples will perform their guilty pleasures in two one hour episodes with no results show.
