The daughter of one of the world's most wanted drug lords has been nabbed on suspicion of attempting to enter the United States on someone else's passport, U.S. officials said.
At San Diego’s San Ysidro port of entry, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar was arrested Friday and accused with fraud and mishandle of visas, permits and other documents.
Guzman Salazar told authorities that she is the daughter of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, two U.S. officials said Monday. The officials requested for anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the arrest publicly.
Kelly Thornton, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office said a woman who allegedly claimed that she was Alejandrina Giselle Guzman was charged Monday in federal court in San Diego, only she could not confirm that the woman charged was Guzman's daughter.
Jan Ronis was hired by Guzman Salazar as her attorney. Ronis’ list of clients with links to organized crime has included Benjamin Arellano Felix, the fallen leader of the eponymous drug cartel that was one of Mexico's most powerful. Ronis refused to comment on the charges and said he just learned about the case.
It was stated on the complaint that Guzman Salazar tried to enter the country on foot, handing over a non-immigrant visa contained in a Mexican passport. The purpose of her entering was she planned to go to Los Angeles to give birth to her child. According to the U.S. officials she told authorities that she was pregnant.
