After the Split of the Soviet Union, reunification of Germany, the split of, the bloody split of , Padania gained its name in Northern Italy to indicate the call for autonomy or even independence from Italy, the Catalonians are seeking their independence from Spain, which is having a violent crisis in the Basque region which is calling for independence in North-west Spain. Add to that the Separatist parties in Scotland and the Flemish call for splitting Belgium for the Flemish to have their own state away from the French-speaking Wallonia region.
In the latest local elections, indicators suggest that the Flemish National Party (NVA), which seeks to divide Belgium further, became the largest political force of Flanders, the Belgian Flemish-speaking region. In Belgium, the Dutch-Speaking northern region has already gained its fiscal independence from the state, while still sharing defense and other areas with the French-speaking south.
Considering the relatively wealthier Flemish region compared to Wallonia, the NVA believes that Flanders should not continue wasting their wealth by subsidizing Wallonia.
Would the economic and financial crises of the Euro Zone add to the flames already escalating in different parts of the European continent; fueled by nationalists to get more independent states within the union? The European Union will need to act strongly to maintain its weaker components from collapsing and probably having further splits, which are impacting the integrity of the union and raising questions on its legitimacy, its criterion to accept members and leadership to manage the current economic and financial crises.
