Muslims call for 'holy war' as film fury spreads to Europe

Report By: Nina Rai

Cairo, Oct. 13, 2012

In a move sure to goad passions among Islamic fundamentalists, the leader of al-Qaida has called on Muslims to wage a “holy war” against the United States and Israel over an anti-Islam video, which subsequently triggered mayhem world wide.

Ayman al-Zawahiri extolled as "honest and zealous" the aggressors who stormed the American embassy in Cairo and its consulate in Benghazi last month, purportedly over a video that ridiculed the Muslim’s revered Prophet Mohammad.

The US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, 52, and three other embassy staff died in the Sept. 11 attack on the US Consulate at Benghazi. The private and amateurish video “Innocence of Muslims” was made by an Egyptian-born US Coptic activist.

Al-Zawahri said the film made in California denigrating Prophet Mohammad indicates that Washington was waging a Zionist war against Muslims. He called for more protests around US embassies worldwide in an audio recording released by al-Qaida’s media branch As-Sahab.

In a message posted also on militant website Mujahedin al-Ansar and other Islamic websites, al-Zawahri called for “free and distinguished zealots” of Islam who stormed the consulate and protested outside other US embassies to “continue their opposition to American crusader Zionist aggression against Islam and Muslims.”

The Egyptian-born preacher claimed Washington “permitted the film in the name of personal freedom and freedom of expression, but this freedom did not prevent them from torturing Muslim prisoners,” imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Al -Zawahiri, who became the al-Qaida chief after the death of Osama bin Laden last year, also condemned President Barack Obama and his Democratic party for pledging at their pre-election convention to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

The Islamic theologian said this pledge as also Obama’s prayers at Jerusalem’s Western Wall made during a 2008 visit, indicated that Muslims were facing a “crusader Zionist war” led by America.

Opinion: By all accounts this call for waging a “holy war” by Al-Zawahri looks to be an al-Qaida attempt to leverage from the outraged sentiments of Muslims over the anti-prophet film and utilize it to promote their agenda of leashing violence and hatred against US and Israel, their two arch enemies. The anti-Islam film is like a "gift horse" for the al-Qaida to fuel fundamentalist hatred and unleash their unbridled rage towards Washington and Tel Aviv over the death of al-Qaida’s late chief Osama bin Laden.

One can understand the genuine hurt sentiments of Muslims worldwide due to the anti-prophet film, and the issue is slowly dying down as well. However, the community as a whole needs to be on the alert not to allow the now dying embers of hurt sentiments over the film to be rekindled and usurped by the Islamic fundamentalists like al-Qaida, whose only agenda is to unleash terror, violence and mayhem in the pursuit of its mindless goals.

Thanks for the story Nina,

Interestingly enough, last night I watched a documentary on CBC TV, which highlighted some of the struggles in the middle east over the past 60 years. The document was done aboard an oil tanker and basically said that the British had control in the Middle East until about 50 years ago or so. The reason was to allow the free flow of oil to the world markets. It came to a point where the benefits did not substantiate the expense. Britain in fact was going broke with their involvement in the Middle East.

The Americans, realizing that they needed oil, despite being the largest producers, made a deal with the Saudi Kings and developed the oil reserves in Saudi Arabia. In order to protect the flow of oil they needed to control the Strait of Hormuz. So they became the power broker that took Britain's place in the Middle East.

Looking back at the last decade, it is easy to see why the US and Britain became involved in the war in Iraq. It allowed them to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and they had a simple way to control the Iranian part of the Strait of Hormuz by exercising its military power. Even if the Strait of Hormuz was closed down temporarily, it would have a devastating effect on the global economy.

From the outset of the war in Afghanistan, I felt that this was more about getting a pipeline from the Caspean to the Indian Ocean. The Russians tried it and now the Americans. Neither are or were successful. The cost of NATO troops in Afghanistan is another example of costs becoming prohibitive.

Empires come and go and it would appear to me, at least by appearance, that the American empire is slowly coming to its end as well. Thus the push for energy independence, etc.

While Saudis do relatively well with their oil revenues, the remainder of the Middle East is still mostly in poverty. Unemployment among those 30 and under is rampant. It is no surprise that the extremists are gaining a foothold.

So while the video is a great excuse for the upheaval and hatred against America, much of it can be rationalized by the West's involvement in the Middle East for the sake of oil.

Karl, this is an article in itself. For most who don't understand the background, you explained it pretty good.

Agree with Joyce, its an enlightening
backdrop on why US is embroiled in the
Middle East. So Karl, the bottom-line
is oil and that explains why the Islamic
fundamentalists have this inherent mistrust
and hatred against the US and its not just
the 9/11 spill off. Thanks for the feedback
Karl.

Or in the words of the late comedian Flip Wilson "The devil made me do it." The anger of Muslims over a movie that insults their religion gets them to riot? Try boycotting the offensive movie instead. Your life cannot be replaced.

Just when the issue of the anti-Islam
film was dying down, comes Mr. Zawahri
to once again rake it up, wonder where
will all this lead to...its quite scary
actually the very thought of a third
world war. Thanks George for giving
your opinion.

There is a distinct Muslim lack of understanding of the situation in Western secular countries. In Muslim countries the film would be blasphemous and not allowed. Muslims just take it for granted that if the film was even allowed it means that the U.S. sanctions blasphemy so the government is responsible. This is nonsense of course because U.S. law does not punish blasphemy. Apparently many Muslims cannot even conceive of this.

Thanks Northsunm for the feedback.
While there is no denying that
the blasphemy laws are different
in the West and Middle East, now
the passive issue of the anti-
Islam film is being raked up only to
galvanize the radicals and extremists
to fuel more hatred and anger against
the west. Somewhere this got to be
stopped.

The video is a scapegoat. Like Karl said, the issue is oil wealth and American involvement in the Middle East. They're a little tired of invaders, well, invading.

In the beginning the outrage over
the video was definitely genuine,
however, slowly it does seem to
have been high-jacked by the
extremists and radical elements.
Appreciate the feedback Benjamin.

Nina, those 'dying embers' you mentioned are never that. There is always something to send them blazing. This threat and rhetoric has become a 'takiya kalaam' for them.
Posted By NinaRai Nina Rai | 8 months ago
Well Joyce, even if there was no embers
they would still create one to sing their
favorite signature tunes of fatwas and
holy wars, the word takiya kalaam is quite
apt in the context. Thanks Joyce for the
opinion.

Appreciate the feedback Martin
and Terry. @Terry you have a point
why should a private citizen's
decision be made to include the
Americans as a whole, its ridiculous.
The chief is looking only an excuse
to target US.

If this kind of provocation
is still circulating in the world.
It will not achieve any of the goals
of man himself. As good as all of the alert.
There might be others who are doing
the nerve interference.
Thanks for Sharing Nina. Best regard.

Its nothing but incitement to
more violence. When will this
cycle of violence ever end.
Appreciate the feedback Taufan.
