NHK World News ---- Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Description -- South Korea has begun a military exercise around the disputed Takeshima islands in the Sea of Japan. Japan's government is expected to protest the drill. South Korea has unilaterally exercised control over the islands since the early 1950s, despite Japanese territorial claims and protests. The joint drill on Friday by the South Korean military and maritime police is aimed at preventing trespassing on the islands. South Korea stages similar exercises about twice a year. The last one was in February. The South Korean defense ministry says Navy destroyers and other vessels are taking part. But it says the exercise is on a lower scale than originally planned. A landing drill by Marines has been scrapped, and the number of vessels taking part is reduced. The maritime police are playing a leading role in the exercise instead of the military as initially planned. A South Korean official says the exercise is not intended to prepare for a fight with a friendly nation. Observers say South Korea has scaled back the drill to avoid worsening relations with Japan. Japan has lodged a protest over the South Korean military drill near the disputed Takeshima islands. Takashi Kurai, the deputy chief of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, met Park Joon-yong, the head of the Northeast Asian affairs bureau of South Korea's foreign ministry, on Friday.
