It took seven matchdays for FC Augsburg to come up with its first victory for the season. Friday's opener showed an Augsburg team that is much better than its record. Augsburg was, by far, the better team on the pitch and the end result of 3-1 was not a true reflection of what could have been. Nevertheless three points is three points.
The win moved the Bavarian club into 15th place temporarily, just ahead of Stuttgart.
Augsburg started the match with a bang just 94 seconds into the match when Werner found the target. A well delivered pass by Verhaegh towas headed into the net, giving Augsburg the 1-0 lead.
Debruyne got the equalizer for Bremen in the 19th minute, but Augsburg replied with the go ahed goal in the 32nd minute when Stephan Hain on a pass from Werner, who moved around three Bremen players, pushed the ball easily past the keeper for a 2-1 lead.
Augsburg was the more agressive team in the first half and the 2-1 lead at half time was well deserved. Statistics showed that Augsburg ran a distance of 61.8 km in the first half. A much larger distance covered than at any time during their Bundesliga tenure.
While missing a few sure goal opportunities, either due to slight offsides or outright misses in front of an empty net, Augsburg got the insurance goal in the 72nd minute.
Daniel Maier took a shot at goal from 20 meters and sank it into the lower right hand corner for the 3-1 lead.
Augsburg's win was well deserved. The team was the better team throughout. A final score of 3-1 humbles Werder Bremen.
Tomorow FC Bayern will try to continue its winning streak for the season. Bayern, which is hosting Hoffenheim, has to overcome a loss earlier this week against BATE Borisov. Hoffenheim will be looking for its third win.
Frankfurt plays in Gladbach on Saturday, while Dortmund, which fought to a draw in Manchester City earlier this week, plays Hanover on Sunday. The two teams are separated by one point, with Dortmund in third and Hanover in fifth place. After a 5-0 win last weekend and a 1-1 draw in the Champions League, all eyes will be on Dortmund to see if the winning ways continue.
