Iran is set to cut off access to both Google and Gmail in response to YouTube's refusal to take down the anti-Islam film's trailer, which has already sparked violence throughout the Muslim world. The decision to block Google coincides with a plan to launch a private national Internet in Iran, which the regime claims is designed to protect against cyber attacks like Stuxnet. The Iranian government already operates one of the biggest Internet filters in the world. Iranians have taken to Twitter and Facebook to protest the Google blocking. But such online protest may become a thing of the past if the government goes ahead with its plans for a domestic Internet, which is scheduled for launch in March 2013.
