In Suburban San Diego, two sheriff's deputies were shot Tuesday while they were investigating a case of possible child abuse. The suspect was also shot, authorities said.
The incident happened shortly at noon when the officers arrived at an apartment in Lakeside, a semi-rural community east of San Diego, San Diego County sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said. He refused to elaborate on the situations, including who fired the shots.
In a statement, the sheriff's department said that it had "many witnesses to talk to and evidence to gather."
When asked whether the injuries suffered by the victims were life-threatening, Fraser responded he didn't know. At Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, the deputies went under the knife, according to the sheriff's department, which did not reveal where the suspect was being treated.
How the shooting incident started was a woman said deputies went to the apartment she shares with her boyfriend after she found pornographic pictures of him with her two young daughters on his cellphone. She called sheriff’s investigators about the photos who listened in on a call in which the woman faced up to her boyfriend and he told her he was offered $50,000 to post the images on the Internet.
The unidentified woman, (was not named to protect her children’s identities), said she heard deputies arrive at the apartment while she was on the phone. She heard gunshots and someone say, "Officers down."
The woman’s boyfriend said he shot himself and then the woman heard him surrender.
The shootings incident occurred near El Capital High School, which was briefly put on lockdown and the apartment complex residents were evacuated and surrounding streets were closed.
Fraser said the last time two San Diego sheriff's deputies were involved in a single shooting was in the 1980s.
