At least nine climbers have been killed in an avalanche in Nepal. It is thought that most of the dead climbers are French who were part of a group of Europeans attempting to climb one of the most dangerous peaks in the world.
The mountain that they were climbing was Manaslu. They were near the top of the mountain when they were hit by an avalanche. The group was twenty five strong.
Ang Tshering, vice-president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said: "Most of the dead people are French, one or two are Spanish, one Italian, one Sherpa and one German."
It is reported by the local police that 13 people have been rescued and three are still missing. All rescue operations have been called off overnight. The police also reporetd that there were several injured climbers stuck at the group's base camp as helicopters had been grounded due to poor visibility.
Manaslu is not the highest mountain in the world which is Everest but it is one of the most dangerous. Many climbers have died attempting to climb to it peak which is the eighth highest in the world.
