The one-armed, one-legged amputee was in a whhelchair. Reportedly the man cornered the officer in a corner of a room in the group home where the caretaker had called for assistanc.
Reportedly the dead man was making threats and attempting to stab the officer. It turned out the weapon was a pen.
A police spokesperson said the officer did not know what the man was attempting to harm him with and for his self - protection discharged his weapon.
The group home owner John Garcia told the ' Houston Chronicle ' that the man had a history of mental illness, and had been living at the home for approximately eighteen months.
The police officer has been put on leave whilst an investigation is carried out.
It will not help the officer's cause if a fatal shooting he had made in 2009 were taken into consideration one would have thought.
It seems in this case the officer issued a warning which the deceased ignored. This would have been the proper procedure to follow; however it does seem an extreme course of action the officer took, in view of the fact the victim was a double amputee.
