According to the latest research, people fond of soda and high sugar drinks are more at risk to obesity problems if genetically they have more tendency to become obese. These drinks are otherwise also harmful for health, but even more dangerous for those who have high genetic vulnerability to obesity.
"We found that high intake of sugary beverages amplifies the genetic risk [of obesity] in some people. If you are at a higher genetic risk for obesity, the more likely drinking soda makes those genes likely to be amplified," Lu Qi, a scientist from Harvard University said, as reported on usnews.com.
Consumption of soda and sugary drinks has greatly increased over the years and now obesity has become a major health issue in many parts of the world, especially in the United States. The administration is now taking it very seriously and formulating laws to control the rising obesity rate. The sale of these products is being controlled to reduce the obesity rate.
"Our data supports such a ban of sugar-sweetened beverages. In general, everybody should reduce their sugary beverages, but their obesity-causing effects appear to be stronger in certain people," Qi explained the findings of the latest study.
The causes of the greater effect of soda and drinks on people with genetic tendency of obesity have not been clearly explained by this new study. They would be identified with further studies. However, the study emphasizes that people should avoid excessive consumption of such drinks, as they are creating harmful effects.
The study is being supported by other medical experts as well to create awareness among people about the causes of obesity and healthy eating. “This study provides strong evidence that there is a significant interaction between an important dietary factor, intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, and a genetic- predisposition score, obesity and the risk of obesity,” Sonia Caprio, a pediatrician at the Yale School of Medicine in Connecticut stated, as reported on bloomberg.com.
The issue needs to be dealt with on an emergency basis, as the trend of consuming beverages has reached a peak point and people do not realize that it's unhealthy for them. Children are fond of such drinks and consume them in their daily diet. It's causing a rise in medical expenses for the public, as they visit doctors more often for treatment of obesity issues. It will not be incorrect to say that this problem is fast getting out of control now.
