43 year old Duchess an asian elephant has cataract operation carried out at Paignton Zoo Devon.
The operation was decided upon to relieve the pain the animal had been suffering from it. All the poor creature had been able to differentiate was between night and day.
The animal was anaethetized by David Burton and Jo Jago; whilst the very delicate operation was carried out by consultant opthamologist Jim carter assisted by John Lewis.
On recovery from the operation Duchess tenderly explored her eye with her trunk. The trunk has such a delicate sense of smell that it acts almost as a third eye. Elephants are also blessed with extra sensitive hearing and would have been aware apart from during the operation everything that was going on around her.
Duchess had previously had her other eye removed in an earlier operation because of glaucoma.
It is anticipated that Duchess's sight will now be fully resored.
