Congratulations are in order forand Gerard Pique. The Columbian pop sensation announced on her website on Wednesday that she is expecting a baby with her soccer star boyfriend.
The announcement confirmed pregnancy rumors that had been surrounding the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer for months. Shakira also revealed that she would put all "promotional activities" on hold to focus on her pregnancy.
“As some of you may know, Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby!” Shakira said in a statement on her Facebook page. “At this time we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days.”
The newly appointed judge on “The Voice” will not participate in iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas this weekend. The 35-year-old star also apologized to her fans for having to cancel her appearance at the festival.
"But I'm sure this weekend in Las Vegas will be spectacular and I will be closely following everything that happens there!" she added. “I'd like to thank Clear Channel and my fans for their constant love and understanding. Big kiss! And will see you very soon!"
This will be the first child for the “Rabiosa” songstress and 25-year-old Pique, who went public with their relationship last year. Shakira revealed that she was dating the sports star by posting a picture of the pair on Twitter and Facebook with a caption reading, “I present to you my sunshine.”
Rumors started swirling in June when website TV Notas reported that Shakira was allegedly pregnant and had purchased a luxury mansion in Barcelona with her footballer boyfriend to get settled with their newborn.
Shakira’s pregnancy news comes just one month after the celebrity gossip site published photos of her and Gerard Piqué entering the maternity section of a clinic in Miami. Despite the photographs, the couple remained silent for weeks, while members of Shakira’s professional team along with her father denied the rumors.
Shakira recently replacedon the U.S. version of “The Voice” to become one of the coaches in season four of the reality singing contest next year.
It was announced on Tuesday that 31-year-old Christina, who is taking the season off to concentrate on her music, and fellow coach Cee Lo Green will be replaced by Shakira and R&B star Usher. Aguilera and Green will return for season five of the show.
